I was invited by Etsy Press to be in the audience for an all-Etsy audience, for her Etsy Show to air on Thursday, April 26.

I took the train from New Haven, CT to Grand Central Station, and took a taxi to my first stop, where I purchased some special buttons that I use in many of my fabric flowers. I was on West 39th Street in the heart of the Fashion District.

From my first stop, I walked to Hyman, Hendler and Sons, the oldest ribbon shop. This was a treat. I didn't get a picture, because the outside of the shop was under scaffolding. From there I walked and walked, browsing through the beautiful ribbon and fabric shops- there are so many! Walls were covered with ribbon, lined with trims, and stocked with every button, sequin and rhinestone imaginable!

I could have stayed in those shops all day. In fact, I'm planning a day to go back to spend more time, but I had to get over West 26th Street for the taping.

When I got over to the studio, we waited under Martha's awning. I met several great crafters that were just as excited as I was to be there.

just to name a few.

Jennifer makes beautiful hand-felted items from wool. She raises her own sheep and hand shears them, dyes and spins the wool, and then makes gorgeous skeins of yarn, adorable little gnomes and fairies, and animals. She made these two puppies for Martha, which are made to look like Martha's own two dogs:

How cute are they!? I was so excited when Martha walked over and Jennifer was able to give them to her. I wish I could have taken a picture of Jennifer while she was talking to Martha, but we weren't allowed to have our phones/cameras on.

People were very busy in Martha's test kitchen, which is to the side of her studio. There were no food segments in the Etsy taping, though.

We all held our handmade items on our lap. This was awkward for me, as I had to smile and clap when directed to do so. I was fake-clapping so that I wouldn't wreck my basket! And thank goodness they didn't catch me on camera to my knowledge. I had frizzed up from the humid air in NY.

I was sitting in the front row, right in front of Martha. At one point they had to stop taping and do a re-do of her introduction to a segment, because her blouse button was popping. Oops. Between one of the segments she walked over and said hello to us, and checked out the items in the front row, so I was glad to be sitting where I was.

It was a great day! From the studio I took a taxi back to the train station and headed home. Thankfully my son's first baseball game was cancelled due to weather, so I didn't miss it. :)

The basket that I was holding during the show will be raffled off Thursday afternoon after the show airs. The information on the raffle is in my previous post.

Oh, I forgot. Everyone is asking me about the giveaways. We received a "Martha Stewart Show" bag with a $50 certificate toward any HP item. There was a 10-pack of her paints and a painting tool set with stencils, which my daughter Julia has claimed. There were two other types of paint in the bag that I haven't really looked at yet. One of the guests has a book published on polymer clay jewelry, so we got that book and three packages of clay. My daughter Sara is all about that. My son Adam? He was happy enough to see the picture of the train I was on. And my husband- well he was thrilled that I got to see Jenna Fischer on the streets of New York- she plays Pam on The Office, one of our favorite shows.
Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-81476763062871523222012-04-22T12:58:00.000-04:002012-04-22T13:00:37.752-04:00Ladybug Bouquet Raffle Details

The organization was founded by Dina Manzo, who was a reality star on Housewives of New Jersey. I admit that I watch a few of the Housewives shows. (Okay, truth be told, all of them. All of you who watch with me will agree that this is a guilty pleasure, watching grown women argue over nonsense each week.) But anyway. I love the cause.

The bouquet will be the exact one that I will be holding during the taping of an all-Etsy-seller audience for the Martha Stewart Show on Monday, April 23. Martha has asked that we all bring an item to hold on our laps during the taping. The show will air Thursday, April 26 at 10:00 a.m. on the Hallmark Channel.

The raffle winner will be posted on the day that the show airs. So you may purchase a raffle ticket now and until the morning of the show day. I'll keep you posted on that date. As it is Martha's last go at taping her shows, I don't think it will be too long before this show airs.

Here's how it will all work. Easy.
1. Buy raffle ticket(s) for $1.00 each. One ticket gives you one entry into the raffle. Buy ten tickets for $10.00, and you will have ten entries.
Thank you for participating- this is my first charitable raffle, so I'm looking forward to it. I'm not really looking forward to wind and rain during my trip to NY, however!Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-55050313992355702772012-01-22T15:27:00.006-05:002012-01-22T15:41:25.232-05:00MusicalI love this bouquet- it makes me want to put on a fur coat and go to the opera with a red flower in my hair. The thing is, I'd have to first go get a haircut, buy new heals and remember how to walk in them, get my nails done, find something to wear that doesn't involve yoga pants and a sweatshirt...it's nice to dream.

I made this today and both of my girls want it. Sara is playing the flute and Julia is playing the clarinet, so they both have a new love for things with musical notes on them. They both play in the school handbell club, too.

I'm a bit of a music geek myself. I played the piano and mallet percussion during my school years, and continued on to play in community theatres in the pit orchestra. I also played in my church handbell choir, and went on to direct that choir for several years. When I moved out on my own, I found a local church where I was living, and joined their handbell choir. Before Mark and I got married, he came along and joined the handbell choir, too- that's commitment! One of the last times we played with that handbell choir was the Sunday morning of Julia's Christening, back in 2000.

I was thrilled to find out that our elementary school here has a small handbell club. The girls both joined, and I've been going in to help out and play when I'm needed. I was thrilled this week when the music teacher asked me to help out his church handbell choir a few towns over as a substitute/alternate player. It's an advanced group, and I'm looking forward to playing again!

Maybe I'll have to make myself a musical flower for my hair! :)Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-6925042770822795472012-01-04T08:36:00.002-05:002012-01-08T17:37:27.691-05:00A whole new year of crafting!I love a new, fresh year. I especially love that 2012 will have an extra day because it's a leap year! I've decided that the best crafting goal I can have this year is to destash my abundant stash of fabric, buttons, embellishments, flowers, appliques, etc. that took up half of our moving space last year. (Sssh...don't tell my husband.) It's still taking up half of our basement. I've decided to destash slowly but surely, by making one-of-a-kind or limited items for my Etsy shop. You'll see them throughout the year. Here are a few below- but fair warning, if you love them, get them quickly. These won't be regular items, and they will be offered at great, low prices.

Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-79945342440806885892011-12-16T11:10:00.004-05:002011-12-16T11:22:15.531-05:00Peppermint Bark SnowflakesI fell in love with this pretty way to make peppermint bark with a snowflake mold. I saw the idea on Pinterest, of course.

So I set out to make mine this year using the Wilton Bite Size Snowflakes silicone mold.

I like how they came out. The Wilton mold I found was a little less detailed than the pretty ones I saw on Pinterest, but I'm happy with them. For the larger ones in the center of the bags, I used a regular snowflake cookie cutter, placed on parchment paper. Here they are, all wrapped and ready to go to my husband's office, the neighbor's house, the mailman, and anyone on our list that deserves a special-something at Christmas.

Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-43563702261421447042011-11-10T12:23:00.003-05:002011-11-10T12:41:19.905-05:00HoliDazeOur family has always loved halloween. The kids were really looking forward to it this year, because we are in a big, family-friendly neighborhood now. Rumor was that we would get over 200 trick-or-treaters, a neighbor up the street would offer hayrides to the kids, and there was a special house that gave out humongous candy bars.

Unfortunately we were the victims of storm Alfred here in the northeast. On Saturday night before Halloween (which was Monday) we got a very heavy, wet snow that wreaked havoc on the trees that were still covered in leaves. So many trees fell and caused damage to power lines- over 800,000 people lost power here in Connecticut alone. And to think, we were some of the lucky ones that got power back after six days. My friend just a mile away suffered on for eight days.

This is my pumpkin on my front step at the beginning of the storm. I love it- I bought it a few years ago in our old town. It is made out of a recycled propane tank. It's heavy and it can't be smashed!

Here is the morning after, and what was left of a pretty dogwood tree in our front yard. The whole tree is lost now. So sad. I'm not going to cry over this one, though- dogwood trees make an awful mess in the Spring.

The kids ended up losing 4 days of school, and halloween was cancelled. So many power lines were down in our neighborhood that it wasn't safe for trick-or-treating. We slept by the fireplace in the living room all week, kept our food in coolers covered with snow, and cooked as much as we could on the grill before the food spoiled in the thaw. We all became characters from "Little House on the Prairie" and told funny stories by candlelight at night.

Over a week later, we've put that sad holiday behind us and we're looking forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas. I've put all of my halloween decorations away in hopes that next year they will be enjoyed a little more!

I've been busy getting some new holiday items listed in my Etsy shop. I missed having power for six days- I couldn't make much of anything, and I was having withdrawals!

I hope everyone else had a nice Halloween. I'm enjoying a quiet week before I start thinking about holiday baking and Christmas shopping next week.

Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-90600065897274316362011-11-05T16:39:00.004-04:002011-11-05T16:42:29.445-04:00Hello Kitty! Here's a Hello Kitty bouquet listed on Etsy. And purple.I've neglected blog posts, I know. Here's why. 1. Soccer. 2. Soccer. 3. Soccer. We are on the other side of town at the soccer fields 7 days a week. Sara is on a rec team and a travel team, Adam is on a rec team, and Julia is on a rec/travel team. That means practices Monday through Friday, and three to five games on the weekends.

I don't know what we'll do when November comes- I wonder if I'll be bored to death!? As busy as we are, I wouldn't change a thing. We enjoy being out on the fields in the cooler weather.

I had Julia in mind when I made this bouquet. She loves horses, and she loves purple. So I combined the two into a bouquet. It has been such a fun summer visiting friends, traveling to Cape Cod and Maine, and some trips to MA and NH. Fall brings us routine, but too much of it. We are bracing ourselves for a full schedule of soccer, with all three kids playing again. On top of karate, girl scouts, etc, etc, etc.

I'll be back in the swing of things next week with new fall designs as well. But in the meantime, this might be my favorite set of clips- so pretty in pink with cotton crochet flowers. Am I too old to wear these?

And it will be like this for several days. I'm okay with it, though- it gives me a chance to get some Spring cleaning done inside while the kids are in school. Rain does make for some lazy days, though- the kids sports games and practices usually end up being cancelled, so it means we can all relax and have a leisurely evening.

Over the weekend I found these hot pink bleeding hearts in three or four parts of the yard. We had one of these plants in our last yard, so it was nice to see them here.

The rain subsided just long enough for me to get out to the deck to take a picture of this new bouquet. It's listed on Etsy. It definitely brightens things up!

Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-34940496416071378192011-05-13T13:55:00.003-04:002011-05-13T14:00:07.264-04:00Juicy FruitHere's another ready-to-ship bow bouquet listed on Etsy. Where did the first four months of the year go? Oh yeah, complaining about snow, rain and cold...that's where. Well today we had another beautiful Spring day in Connecticut.

Everything in the yard is starting to grow, and since this is our first spring here, we're watching to see what comes up. We have lotsa hosta (lol, which I hated in our last house, so I dug it up and tossed it in the woods, only to find out that my neighbors loved it, so they went and retrieved it.) We also have a beautiful bed of ivy in our side yard that makes a nice backdrop for my pictures. It just produced some small white flowers, which are now going away. Everything is so green. Green, green, green. So green that we didn't have one flower in the yard. Until just recently, when I looked out back and noticed this lonely little daffodil had poked through that ivy bed.

It was the only flower we had in the yard. I couldn't believe it! Until a couple of days ago, when it got a friend! It's friend is white with a yellow center.

So those are the two flowers in my yard. Pretty sad, huh. Well, I've added some color to my yard, with this pretty rainbow bow bouquet, that is available on Etsy!

You can see that bed of ivy in the background. The bouquet adds some color to my yard, don't you think? I'm okay to part with it though, since my kids brought me loads of pansies and marigolds from their school plant sale. I will no longer have a green yard once I get a few things planted.

And maybe I'll be surprised, and something that is currently green in my yard will flower. Happy May, everyone!
Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-57628101297349116532011-04-23T18:05:00.005-04:002011-04-23T18:10:12.867-04:00Happy Easter!Julia made these eggs today during our family egg-coloring. Since we're a bit of a distance away from our families now, we will have a leisurely morning, a family bike ride, and an easy New England-style boiled dinner.

The Easter Bunny usually plays some tricks in our house, so I'm looking forward to a fun morning. Many blessings to all of you!Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-17866903253173432172011-03-20T18:35:00.002-04:002011-03-20T18:42:59.919-04:00Dreaming of the BeachIt's only the first day of Spring, but I have summer on my mind! We live so close to the beautiful beaches of southern CT now- we'll be able to go often, instead of planning an entire day trip to see the ocean. We visited a beach last weekend in our hoodies, puffer vests and mittens- it was cold! But still beautiful, and we found some gems to bring home. The kids have plans to collect sea glass all summer and store it in a clear jar to show off their loot.

So with the beach on my mind, here is a headband that makes me think of warm sand, hot sun, and crashing waves.

Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-52953047479812762922011-03-19T18:20:00.002-04:002011-03-19T18:23:46.869-04:00Charming!I am in love with these gorgeous charm/fringe bracelets by Kim Smith. I'm deciding which one I'll buy myself. Right now the one pictured is my favorite, but it seems to change every time I visit her store. Yesterday we saw a yard full of purple crocuses on our way out to explore the coastline east of New Haven. That's a sure sign!

Once the kids are awake and have recovered from their hour loss of sleep (not really, they'll just sleep in) we're heading over to the rail trail so that Mark and I can get a run in together and the kids can haul on their scooters.

Our house is a stone's throw from an entrance to the Farmington Canal Rail Trail. We are going to get lots of use out of this gem this summer!

Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-63012777604736706582011-02-05T08:38:00.003-05:002011-02-05T08:57:05.230-05:00Snow Brain!I've completely lost count of how many snow days we've had already. The kids haven't had a full week of school this winter. More snow is coming today, with two more storms expected next week. The snow banks are enormous, so the kids are having a blast getting outside and climbing, digging tunnels, and sliding down them. We have an ice cover on top of the snow now, so they love the fact that they can walk on top of the snow.

I took a walk through the icy neighborhood yesterday, and couldn't help but dream about spring coming. I can't wait to see yards full of flowers!

Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-80884569218466411812011-01-23T13:56:00.003-05:002011-01-23T14:07:01.636-05:00Frigid!We woke up to temps below zero this morning, so it's an inside day for everyone. If frostbite can set it after five minutes in temps like this, I don't want my kiddos exposed too long. Luckily the sun is bright, and it's pouring through the windows. We're all hanging in today doing our own thing. I love days like this when there is no shopping to do, no places to be, no visitors to clean for. We must look like the silliest family hanging around all day in our bathrobes, the five of us. I did get out of mine long enough to hit the elliptical machine, but as soon as I was out of the shower I was back into my comfies!

I made this multi-toned flower today. I love the colors in it, especially for Valentine's Day.

Enjoy your Sundays, everyone. It will be interesting to see if the kids have a 5-day school week. We haven't had one yet this year with all of the snow and ice. There's something about another big storm coming in on Tuesday/Wednesday.Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-43619076671676000382011-01-21T18:15:00.006-05:002011-01-21T18:52:56.185-05:00Spacing OutI'm enjoying my new, sunny workspace in our house. My work area is smaller than what I had before- a compromise I made so that my middle child Sara could have her own room. She and her sister Julia shared everything before- a room, a grade in school, clothes, toys...it was about time for her to have her space and she deserves it. The house we are in now lets us spread out a little.

Our master bedroom is big enough to fit our huge elliptical machine, and besides our bed, furniture and television, we still have plenty of space for my work area. So even though I lost out in the deal spacewise, I love my creative space. It is on the first floor, and I have two windows that give me plenty of sunshine. (My craft room was in a finished basement before...I felt so isolated!) I keep most of my supplies downstairs in my basement, which leaves a minimal mess where I'm working- I'm forced to keep it cleaned up and tidy, and I'm feeling more organized this way. One of my windows looks out into our back yard, so today while I was working I was able to watch the kids sledding outside.

I realized during the move that I have *way* too many supplies. I've been making bows and clips for eight years now, so I have accumulated thousands upon thousands of yards of ribbon, and thousands and thousands (that's sick to say, but true) of gorgeous appliques, silk flowers, buttons, beautiful beads, and so much more. So I've decided for now to continue to create ready-to-ship items on Etsy at a very reasonable price. My website is open also, so if you need something custom-made, you can look there. But for now, my love is finding new things to create with the boxes full of beautiful supplies I have.

Let's not talk about the bins and bins of fabric I have...Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-31867702222616960412011-01-15T06:38:00.005-05:002011-01-15T06:56:08.402-05:00A wee bit cold...First a blizzard, then a nor'easter, and this morning I woke up to a temperature reading of -10 degrees! Brrrrrrrrr! We got 2 FEET of snow in the nor'easter on Wednesday. I don't think we'll have any melting in these temperatures.

What is this I hear that Florida is the only state without snow on the ground? Here are some snowflake clips for winter, whether you're dreaming of snow or buried in it, like we are here in CT!

Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-11553497744907821222011-01-14T09:36:00.002-05:002011-01-14T09:45:53.374-05:00Love and Hearts...real ones.A customer recently purchased 20 of these sweet infant flower headbands to donate to two organizations that send baskets to babies that are in the hospital for open heart surgery to repair congenital heart defects. Some will go to Annabelle Baskets, and some to Love from Lindsay Baskets.

I was so taken by these two organizations that I plan to make a donation of my own of some spring-colored headbands for Easter. Thank you to my customer "D" for contacting me to make these for some special little girls. God Bless.Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3225242117075208428.post-57480674374605497842010-11-22T19:25:00.004-05:002010-11-22T19:38:02.367-05:00Sleeping GiantWe are in Connecticut! It has been a long few months, with Mark living here and the kids and I staying back to sell the house. We did it. In 16 days we had our offer, and after some negotiating, we finalized the offer and we closed last week. It was a tough week for our family, leaving everything we knew. Girl Scouts, Karate, classmates, the creature comforts. My friends. I had a wonderful week laughing and crying with my best friends- but I know we will not lose each other just because of a move. There's Facebook. ;)

We're staying temporarily in the apartment that Mark has lived in since August. Our house will be ready to move into on December 1. For the kids, this is like a luxury hotel. For me, yes, a luxury hotel, but with five people and no personal space. So we've been heading to the playground A LOT. Sanity.

It's a beautiful area. We drive by this monster daily: it is Mount Carmel, but it is called The Sleeping Giant- you can see why. Adam wants this big guy to wake up and start walking around like The Thing. The mountain range is supposed to look like a giant sleeping on his back. We're planning to climb the "chin" in the Spring, where there is a tower.

So we're still in transition. We'll be in our house for Christmas, but I'd like to spend that time getting acquainted with the area and making sure my kids have a good transition to their new school. I'll open just after Christmas, or before January 1.

Thanks to my regular customers who have been stopping by Etsy to buy some ready- to-ship items. It's been nice to see you!Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13060412808923435884noreply@blogger.com0
